In 2007 Malaysia will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its independence (from the UK, the former colonial power). We plan to hold a public diplomacy campaign during the year to mark the anniversary and harness it in order to promote the UK's profile in Malaysia. Click here for more details.

The Society’s Steering Group meets at least every quarter, in advance of meetings of Management, the Trade & Investment Committee and the Education & Culture Committee. Together they initiate and implement the Society’s diverse range of activities.

All activities aim, wherever appropriate, to involve the Society's Malaysian membership resident in London and its environs, in addition to its British membership, and focus on commercial, educational, cultural and political aspects of relations between Britain and Malaysia.

Past functions have tended to centre around the Belgrave Square SW1 location of the Malaysian High Commission where in January 2002 a cultural evening took place prefaced by a short musical recital on pianoforte and violin, followed by an address by the former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Dato' Musa Hitam. Focus group discussions, talks and other events take place at frequent intervals and in venues as diverse as Coutts & Co. on the Strand, HSBC at Canada Square, KPMG at Salisbury Square, the Farmers Club, the Travellers Club and at London University’s School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS).

A vital Society endeavour is the promotion of secondary and tertiary education in the United Kingdom for Malaysian students - the Society has so far monitored the progress of well over 1,000 students through successful academic careers in this country.

In February 2005, in the new premises of the Malaysian Students Department’s Malaysia Hall, Director General English Speaking Union Mrs Valerie Mitchell spoke on “The ESU in a world of change”. In March, Merrick Baker-Bates, a former Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia talked on “Diplomacy as I knew it” and in May, Dr Johann Meuleman, Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Fellow, spoke on “Islam in Malaysia – Comparisons with Islam in neighbouring countries & in the Middle East”. Also in May, after the 2005 Annual General Meeting held in KPMG’s London Head Office John Goodwin, President International Association of Seed Crushers spoke on “Malaysian Palm – Where Now”.

In September 2003, the Society celebrated its 20th Anniversary year at a black tie Dinner held at the National Liberal Club in the presence of the Society¹s Patron & Founder President The Rt.Hon. The Lord Richardson, the Founder Chairman Sir Donald Hawley, and HE the Malaysian High Commissioner to UK Dato¹ Abd. Aziz Mohamed and their wives. Council Member The Rt.Hon. Sir Richard Needham spoke. Malaysian High Commissioner Dato' Aziz spoke at the September 2004 Annual Dinner. Dr Gerard Lyons, Chief Economist & Group Head of Global Research, Standard Chartered Bank, spoke at the September 2005 Annual Dinner.
